Supporting Self-Management

Whether you are someone living with a mental health diagnosis, a friend or family member supporting a loved one or a person working in a mental health setting, self-management is key to maintaining your own health and well-being.

“Self management is a person-centered approach in which the individual is empowered and has ownership over the management of their life and conditions. The role of health and social care professionals, services and treatment is to support the person’s journey towards living well in the presence or absence of symptoms.” (Gaun Yersel, Scottish Government, 2008)

Self-management encourages you to:

  • learn new skills and tools to help you manage your health more effectively

  • work better, and in partnership, with health care professionals

  • take charge of your own health and choose what is right for you

NHS Highland Supporting Self-Management Service have created a library of teaching videos which aim to support the learning and development of self-management skills including: daily living skills, effective problem solving and goal setting skills, skills to help you respond effectively to stress and to regulate your emotions.  Below you will find the educational videos as well as the accompanying workbook which can be used alongside the videos.
