NHSH PDS Awareness, Education & Training

NHS Highland DBT Programme
Someone you are supporting may have been referred for Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Please see below for more information on DBT and the different skills modules.
What is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy?
DBT is a Phase 1 intervention (aimed at safety and stabilisation) for patients with Severe Personality Disorder with Borderline features. It is an intensive psychosocial intervention largely based on cognitive-behavioural principles. It comprises of a weekly skills training group, concurrent weekly individual psychotherapy and weekly peer supervision for all therapists. The treatment usually lasts six months to one year.
The mental health charity Mind has more information about DBT here.
DBT was originally developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD, ABPP.
Marsha explains a little more about DBT in this video:
Access to the DBT programme is obtained following a comprehensive assessment by the NHSH Personality Disorder Service whereby DBT has been deemed the most appropriate evidence-based intervention based on individual circumstances. Referrals to the Personality Disorder Service can only be made by Secondary Mental Health Services i.e. the Community Mental Health Team.
The DBT Cycle
One cycle is 26 weeks. The Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation and Interpersonal effectiveness modules are all 6 weeks long. A 2 week mindfulness module occurs after each 6 week module.
